Hold the money
Set aside the amount you intend to give to Tzedakah.
Use cash for the ceremony. Hold it securely while reciting. Immediately afterward, send the same Pidyon amount through Zeffy or Zelle.

Recite and circle three times
Circle the money above your head while reciting.

Repeat three times while circling the money above the appropriate person’s head.
What if the person is not present?
The text can be said for someone who is away by identifying them by their Hebrew name and their mother’s Hebrew name. Choose “Someone else” and “Not present” above.
Is this the full traditional opening?
Many machzorim first include the verses beginning “Bnei Adam yoshvei choshech…” The short practical text shown here is then repeated three times.

What is Pidyon Kapparot?
Kapparot is a longstanding custom observed before Yom Kippur. With money, the text is recited, the funds are circled above the head, and the money is given to charity. It is meant to awaken repentance and add the merit of Tzedakah; it does not replace Teshuvah, prayer, or making things right.
